"hand-shaping is critical to the evolution of the surfboard. It has been passed down from generation to generation... Hand-shaping really is the soul of the surfboard and in many ways the soul of surfing itself.
It will be a sad day if the hand-shaped surfboard ever goes away."

Alex Knost wins Duct Tape Invitational as reported by SurferMag

Santa Cruz, CA (January 16, 2011) – The Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational Presented by Vans went down January 14 and 15 at legendary Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, CA, with 16 of the best longboarders in the world riding 12-lb, single fin leashless boards along with some serious style and nose riding all for a $10,000 purse.

The first Duct Tape of the 2011 series came through with consistent, fun surf, beautiful weather and big crowds, setting the stage for some amazing longboarding.  The Santa Cruz event also saw the highest point score averages to date, with many waves in the 7 – 9 point range.

After whittling the initial 16 down to the four finalists, Alex Knost  took home $4,000 for first place, Harrison Roach $3,000 for second, Ryan Burch $2,000 for third and Chad Marshall pocketed $1,000 for fourth spot.

Vans also held a special legends round for the first time, featuring Joel Tudor, Herbie Fletcher, Nat Young, Michael Junod and Tyler Hatzikian.

“The legends heat was all time because it included Herbie and Nat, who shaped the sport, along with guys like Tyler and Michael, who are carrying on the tradition,” said contest director and Vans team rider Joel Tudor.  ”To have all of them out there in the water together was unreal.”

Introduced in August at the East Coast Surfing Championships in Virginia Beach and followed by a stop in Montauk in October, the Duct Tape Invitational is an innovative new event Vans developed with Joel Tudor that showcases longboarding in its purest aesthetic and pushes the envelope on how longboarding is typically viewed.
